Complicated to get a Dutch Drivers License

A friend of mine had told me his story of getting his Dutch. His story was a long one, perhaps because he was not good at driving cars with proper road signs. Perhaps he has driven more cycles than cars in his life in India (and the same here in Holland) and hence may be on the extreme side. But then, these people have greeting cards that congratulate the person who has passed his/her driving test and has been awarded a license to drive. The person celebrates this long-awaited moment with his friends and family, so its not a mean achievement.

The author summarizes the problems very concisely and precisely
Just what makes it so difficult? Cost, language barrier, cost, cultural confusion, and cost.
The process starts with clearing the theory test. Even though the test is in English, the book having the possible set of 1500 questions is only available in Dutch.

Once you clear the test, you need to find a good driving school
Ask the price per hour. This should be 32-36 euros, which seems like an exorbitant price - because it is.
If you do not speak good Dutch already, there are suggestions of how to find a good instructor.

If you're still a novice in Dutch, don't let foolish pride stand in your way and accept a driving instructor who has no knowledge of your native language or at least of English.

Once you have taken the set of driving lessons (could be anything from 10 hours to 50 hours, particularly if you have never driven a car), you can opt for a practice test, but...
You can opt for a practice test before the official road exam. But this will cost you about 120 euros.

The author feels that the test is now easy...
Having survived the excruciating driving lessons, the road test will be a breeze.
...but my friend took the exam four times, having failed thrice. Well, his case could be an extreme, but he showed me why its really difficult. We were on our bikes when he was describing this, and a car was coming from our left. Instinclively, we stopped our bikes (or slowed them considerably by applying the brakes). But since we were on the car's right, we had priority and the car had to stop. Our Indian instincts forces us to apply the brakes where none were required. My friend said that if we did this in a car during the driving test, the examiner would deduct a point for this 'mistake'. A couple of more points and you have flunked the test. Maybe coming froma country where traffic rules are made to be broken, it becomes difficult to (sub-consciously) realize that others will obey the rules and makes it difficult to pass the test.

So now, if you do fail this test...
If, however, you fail this (practical) exam, brace yourself for countless driving lessons, a theory exam (58 euros) and another more discriminating road exam (120-180 euros).

At eh edn of all this pain...
Isn't that seven-speed bike looking more and more attractive?

My company's co-CEO

On March 29, Reuters and others reported that Wiet Pot had joined as co-CEO of my company. At that time, I did not know that Wiet meant Weed in Dutch. And Pot is also a commonly used slang for Weed. Yesterday, I was made aware of this in my Dutch classes.

So here is the joke.
He goes to some conference and he is asked to tell his name and where he comes from.
His reply could be something like this
"My name is Wiet Pot. Do I still need to tell you where I come from?"

Simple question, funny answers

I was looking at a bike (bicycle) ad posted in the classifieds section. I had a query about bikes and so I decided to ask my colleagues.

Here is what I had written

I am interested in buying a bike (bicycle). The ad for it says that the read break cable needs to be replaced.

Could anyone give me an idea of how much it would cost me to get this break cable repaired?
Also, how much would one of those heavy locks (2 kg chain locks) cost? I believe the bike does not come with any locks so I’ll have to get them myself.

Apart from the more useful ones, I got these responses

  • I personally don't buy bikes with external gears - they are greasy and dirty.
  • break cable repair is about 500 euro's.
If you bring your bike to me, we'll make a nice deal, i'll do it for 300.
  • Go to the little repair shop in the underground bike storage just outside the train station. They will know.
You may wanna ask them not to break your bike, but to fix the brake.
  • forget about the repairs, having breaks only increases commute time.
For those interested in the answer, its between 10 and 20 Euros, depending upon the shop. If you have the necessary tools, you could buy the cable for 5-7 Eur and do the job yourself. But from experience, I believe its not that easy, particularly if the breaks are one of those drum breaks.

Amsterdam ranks 13 in world list of most livable cities

Mercer has designed an objective way of measuring quality of living for expatriates based on factors that people consider representative of quality of living. Once a year, Mercer conducts a quality of living study in more than 380 cities worldwide based on detailed assessments and evaluations of 10 key categories and 39 criteria or factors, each having coherent weightings reflecting their relative importance.

Among the criteria Mercer takes into account are economy, education, public transport and recreation. Crime statistics play a part as well, as do such issues as personal freedom and media vs. censorship.

World crude prices and Petrol in India

I remember the time when I moved from Bangalore to New Delhi in Mar 2004. I remember buying my car in early May that year. I very clearly the oil price then. It used to be Rs 33.71 per litre in New Delhi. The latest price hike puts it at Rs 50.52. Hence the petrol prices in India have risen by 50% in this period.

I looked at historical crude prices. Crude was trading at about USD 37 in early May 2004. It was last trading at over USD 125. That is a whopping 237%.

Can the striking Left parties tell me what's wrong with this price hike?

Scrap minimum wages...WTF?

The minimum wage should be scrapped because it has no effect on the redistribution of wealth, Bas Jacobs, professor of public finances and economic policy, tells Tuesday's Trouw.

Will someone tell this professor dude that minimum wages are not for 'redistribution of wealth' but for protecting workers from being being exploited.

Penny wise, pound foolish

This is what I call penny wise, pound foolish. If the BTW (Value Added Tax in Dutch) on energy saving bulbs is reduced, would it not give more incentive to people to buy them? I see that the price difference between conventional bulbs and energy saving ones is quite remarkable in Holland, especially in large wattage bulbs (like 75 watt and 100 watt equivalence bulbs). If the BTW is reduced (or better, eliminated for a couple of years), it will give people more incentive, as the break even period will be reduced.

Lowering the btw tax on energy-saving light bulbs is a possibility but is not yet an option...

The minister was commenting on recommendations from her Lighting
Taskforce which says traditional light bulbs of 60 watts and above
should be phased out by 2011 and energy-saving versions be made much
cheaper through lower btw and a scrapping of the import tax.

Hillary cites RFK assassination in explaining why she's still in race

Hillary does it again...and the fears of Obama being assassinated are even more real

"I don't. Because again, I've been around long enough.
You know, my husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he
won the

California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right?
We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in **June** in

lots of speculation about why it is. "

somebody who seeks the highest office in this country, and through that
door shows something not merely troubling, but frightening.

Bad Day For The RIAA: Two High Profile Cases Go Against RIAA

Techdirt: Bad Day For The RIAA: Two High Profile Cases Go Against RIAA
In the Tanya Andersen case (where the RIAA sued an innocent person), the court has awarded Andersen $108,000 in legal fees from the RIAA. You may recall that the RIAA had protested having to pay legal fees, which the judge smacked down.
.....
However, the much bigger news concerns the infamous Jammie Thomas case. As you'll recall, the RIAA won that case, even though it now admits that it said false things under oath... The judge has now admitted that he may have committed a "manifest error of law" in his jury instructions, and it sounds like he's going to order a new trial.

Ticket Vending Macnine Vandalized

NS Railways in Netherlands has touch screen ticket vending machines installed at every railway station. This is how they work. Great use of Flash to teach you how to use the machine.

The day we were to visit Keukenhof (Tulip Gardens), the first machine we encountered had its touch screen vandalized. The machine was rendered completely useless. By the time we were back from our trip, it was back in action. I was not surprised. Here is why.

If all the machines at the station you wish to take the train from are not working, then its a valid reason for you to travel without ticket. Hence it makes all sense for them to rectify the faulty machines as soon as possible.

Postal strikes hit Netherlands

This morning I went to my local post office to get proper stamp affixed on a letter I wanted to send out. The lady there told me that the franking machine was not working. On being asked, she told me that it would not be working in the evening too (this post office opens for 2 hours in the morning and then for two hours in the evening).

Now I know why. Postal staff is on strike today in Amsterdam. I don;t understand why the lady was there in the first place. If you are on strike, you don't open or man your office. Another thing that surprises me is why she did not tell me about the strike.

One world, many rules, even more interpretations

Look at the picture above. Its taken from inside a train yesterday. I happened to notice the piece of paper in the dustbin.

In Netherlands (or most of Western Europe), hardly anyone would give this piece of paper a second look.
The same paper in a country like India might be 'picked' up when no one is looking, and stashed under the mattress , for a few 'private viewings' later.
And if you were to be spotted with this paper in, say, Saudi Arabia, you would be going straight to jail, at the least.

One world, many rules, even more interpretations.
PS: Maybe interpretations is not the appropriate word here.
